Marshmallow — Creation
Before becoming the soft confectionery we know, marshmallow was a plant – Althaea officinalis, the marsh mallow, which grows in marshes and damp meadows.
Its root was extracted for its mucilage, a soft, thick, soothing substance. 19th-century confectioners were inspired by it to create an airy, white paste that melts on the tongue. Marshmallow carries this memory – sweetness as a raw material.
The piece is constructed in alternating horizontal bands, salmon pink and off-white, in a tight, slightly textured stitch.
This dense stitch gives body to the fabric without weighing it down – it holds, it structures, it defines.
Then comes the salmon pink ribbed smocked waistband, handcrafted, which cinches the waist with a precision that only crochet allows: each smock stitch is placed individually, creating a natural elastic effect that adapts to the body.
The square neckline, open front and back, lengthens the bust. The wide straps, edged with a scalloped trim, provide that finishing detail that distinguishes a handmade piece from an ordinary garment. The shell stitch is one of the oldest crochet edging stitches – here, it makes a statement.
Marshmallow can be worn tucked into high-waisted white trousers or a flowing skirt. A very feminine, very structured silhouette – which doesn't need accessories to exist.
