Makemo — The Creation
Makemo is an atoll in French Polynesia — a ring of coral and white sand sitting on the ocean, so low on the water it looks like it's floating.
Its lagoons are pale pink at sunrise, when the low light tinges the water with mother-of-pearl and salmon.
It's this color — this powdery pink that's not quite pink, not quite peach, not quite beige — that this dress wears.
Makemo was born from this atoll. And from the light that falls upon it.
The construction is absolutely delicate.
Vertical columns of crossed bow-tie patterns rise from bottom to top in this soft, uniform powdery pink/salmon — entirely openwork, entirely transparent, like a veil of structured light.
The opaque pink solid stitch upper yoke anchors the piece firmly, while the slightly flared square neckline and wide straps in openwork mesh stitch frame the shoulders with understated elegance.
The back with its V-cutout in the yoke reveals what the front holds back — Cachalabibi's unique way of letting the back speak when the front is silent.
The solid stitch border at the bottom finishes the piece cleanly.
Makemo can be worn over a nude or white swimsuit for a daring transparency, or over a pink bikini for a monochromatic look.
By the sea with golden sandals, on a terrace with white shorts — it is the dress for all golden hours.
